What once began as a way to alert someone to a phone call, the monophonic tunes rapidly became popular with many mobile phone owners. Although the sound was mechanical, it still provided customization and allows users to express themselves.
But it wasn’t until True Tones or Real Tones hit the market where users could download their favorite songs as MP3’s to their phone and hear it as it sounds on their MP3 players. When technology made it possible to assign different ringtones to each contact in a users mobile phone, the MP3 industry really took off. With the average person having over 100 contacts in their phone and assigning at least ten ringtones to specific people, the market hit an all time high.
What makes it so popular is that everyone loves music and no one loves the sound of a ringing phone. We all love to identify with a particular song or maybe a song reminds us of someone. With the ability to assign a song to a person we can make that connection. It also allows us the freedom of not having to look at our phones to know who is calling.
The MP3 industry had no idea it would be so involved in the ringing of mobile phones when it first hit the scene. Created a way to download and play music on the web, its popularity grew with the introduction of MP3 players, particularly the iPod. We became a nation of grooving people as we walked the streets of the city, rode the trains, sat in doctor’s office and anything else we did. Those little white cords hanging from our ears, signified that we were part of something big, united in such a way that we were never before. Upon hearing a song, we always run home to download it to our MP3 player, add it to our profile page on our favorite networking site and now add it as a ringtone. Where once it was cool to own an album of the most popular band, it is now cool to have the latest hit song on your mobile phone.
