When ringtones were still a new innovation, its single purpose was to alert the cell phone owners about incoming calls. During those days, even the monotonous and really boring tones did the job. Nobody had any other choice but to use those plain and often unpleasant ringers at the time. But today, the simple ringtone has evolved into a versatile and sophisticated feature that has captured the hearts of many mobile phone users.

The monophonic tones of yesterday were quite functional and yet were mostly dull, austere, and simply lacked imagination. These old tones have now been overshadowed by the advent of ringtones that are closer to real sounds and are exceedingly fascinating. The newer, modern version of the ringtone can cater to the many preferences of picky customers. In fact, millions of ringtones are available to suit every type of mobile phone user, especially the ones who are fond of downloading as many ringtones as they can into their phones just for the pure fun of it.

The latest buzz in the ringtone circuit is the increased demand for personalized true tones. People want customized ringtones which is why tone developers have come up with software that enables people to produce their own. Gone is the monophonic “beep” ringtone, replaced by the true tone which is steadily improving as time passes by. Another innovation in the ringtone industry is the “singtones” application. It enables inlay lyrics sung by the phone user to be turned into a ringtone through a sing along facility. People can now hear their voice with matching musical accompaniment as a ringtone for their mobile phone.

Ringtone companies have gone a long way in trying to capture the interest of their customers, spending much in research, development and promotion to come up with successful ringtones. There was one such ringtone that enjoyed phenomenal popularity at the time among mobile phone users and it was called the “Crazy Frog.” As a result, the “Crazy Frog” ringtone producer was catapulted into the number one spot in the ringtone industry. The croaking of a frog is not at all that interesting, but still the “Crazy Frog” became all the rage among mobile users. The reason behind its overwhelming popularity was that the sound of the frog in the tone emanated from a famous TV commercial character. The association between ringtone and commercial was the winning formula for that particular ringtone.

The most recent in ringtone innovation is the Name Tone which is basically a true tone that has your name embedded in it. The ringtone will call the attention of its owner by his name each time somebody calls the phone owner. Still another development is the Video Ringtone that plays a combination of a video clip and an MP3 file every time the phone receives an incoming call. The ringtone business is showing no signs of slowing down and the same goes with the number of innovations that are being produced quite often. And this all because of people’s love for mobile ringtones.
